Animario, Madrid’s International Festival of Contemporary Animation Movies (Festival Internacional de Animación Contemporanea de Madrid) is in its inaugural year, showing from the 21st to the 23rd of September.
With the motto “Imagine the real, create what’s imaginable,” the Festival boasts a programming replete with must-see movies of the genre, ranging from stop motions to virtual realities.
Animario will kick off with The Breadwinner. Synopsis: Eleven-year-old Parvana grows up under the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. Her father is wrongfully arrested. She works to support her family disguised as a boy. She works along with her friend Shauzia and discovers a new world of freedom and danger. Never short on courage, Parvana invents fantastical stories that give her the strength to go on. She is bent on finding her father and reuniting her family.
Thrilling and enchanting, The Breadwinner is inspirational and inspiring, a bright animated film about the power of stories to sustain hope in desperate times.
The gripping Un día más con vida (Another Day of Life) brings down the curtain on Animario, an animated adaptation of Ryszard Kapuscinski’s nonfiction three-month record of the Angolan civil war in 1975, co-produced by Poland, Spain, Germany and Belgium.
A “guest festival” is thrown into the mix, Mexico City’s Animasivo Festival de Animación Contemporáneo.
