President’s Breakfast ~ Javier Goyeneche, Ecoalf president
San Pablo CEU University | Calle Tutor 35 | 28008 Madrid
9:00 AM to 10:30 AM (CEST)

Thinking, talking, doing….an international crisis…plastic waste found at sea.
Join us to hear from Javier Goyeneche, president of Madrid-based Ecoalf as he shares his company’s journey from thinking, talking to doing something extraordinary. His crew of eighteen are literally turning “Trash to Fashion.” He is walking his talk…very successfully. Details and tickets for this ACM President’s breakfast below.
“We want to present the first fashion collection made with yarn and fabric that come from garbage found at the bottom of the sea in June in Florence,” said Javier Goyeneche, 45, the president of Ecoalf, the Spanish company behind the venture.

Founded in 2010, the Madrid-based firm has already launched “a new generation” of clothes and accessories made from plastic bottles, old fishing nets and used tyres found on land.

The company, which employs 18 people and posted a turnover of €4.5 million ($4.8 million) this year, already sells its jackets and backpacks made from recycled waste in upscale shops such as Harrods in London and Bloomingdale in New York.

Now Ecoalf says it will be the first company to make clothes from recycled plastic waste found at sea and it has signed on 200 fishing boats in the eastern region of Valencia to act as scavengers.

“Where others see garbage, I see raw material,” said Goyeneche.

May 22, 2018Tuesday
ACM Book Club Meeting
Roll Madrid Restaurante | 23 Calle de Amaniel | 28015 Madrid
7:15 PM to 8:45 PM (CEST)

Join us for a discussion of the book WHEN. The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, by Daniel H. Pink.
From the back cover: Everyone knows that timing is everything. But we don’t know much about timing itself. Our lives are a never-ending stream of “when” decisions: when to start a business, schedule a class, get serious about a person. Yet we make those decisions based on intuition and guesswork. Timing, it’s often assumed, is an art. In When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, Pink shows that timing is really a science.
Book Club Dynamics:  In order to have a meaningful discussion, it helps if attendees have read at least part of the book. If you are unable to do so, we ask that you please have some familiarity with the book’s premise (through book reviews, author interviews/presentations, etc.).
About the American Club of Madrid (ACM) Book Club: The ACM Book Club is a recurring event for ACM members to meet and discuss a selected book. We focus on non-fiction books related to personal and professional growth. We aim to select practical books that have a scientific basis in fields such as behavioral economics, positive psychology or neuroscience. We may sometimes select a podcast episode or TED Talk for discussion.
Please join us for any or all of our discussions. We meet several times a year, on the 4thTuesday of selected months (see our 2018 calendar for specific dates.)
Not yet an ACM member? You are welcome to join us for one meeting to try it out.
