The Democrats portrayed their performance as vindication of their agenda. And the Republicans did not get out the vote as much as they had hoped in spite of the high inflation, crime and a faltering economy they promised to fix. Now is the time for bipartisanship in the Senate and House.

After Democrats and Republicans laid out their arguments, the Senate voted 57 guilty and 43 not guilty, not enough to convict the former president of incitement to insurrection. Donald Trump is therefore not barred from running again in 2024 if he so wishes. Trump supporters were happy at the result and the Democrats were dismayed.
