Due to the enormous interest generated by the historic second impeachment of US President Donald Trump around the world, GUIDEPOST is bringing you the text of the two impeachments. Here is the first, held on 18 December 2019, and revolving around two articles: Abuse of Power and Obstruction of Congress.
This was the third impeachment trial of a president and the third acquittal in American history and as the New York Times put it, “it ended the way it began: with Republicans and Democrats at odds.” The bitterness of the process was exemplified by the fact that Trump didn’t shake House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s hand when he entered to deliver his State of the Union speech, and Nancy Pelosi shredded his written speech into pieces. Too bad our politicians can’t just forgive and forget!
The US House of Representatives voted on Halloween to spook Trump with a 232 to 196 vote on endorsing the Democrat-led impeachment inquiry and set up a new public phase of the investigation. House speaker, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, presided over the vote and said “what is at stake in all of this is nothing less than our democracy.” Republicans in the House were united in defense of President Trump, describing the inquiry as secretive and unfair. Moreover, Trump says the “Deep State” — that is, the Washington bureaucracy — has been against him since his election in 2016.
Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel García Margallo says there’s “absolute parallelism” between the case of Crimea and Catalonia’s. He could very well be right.
