He was very much present during last year's celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution. That constitution provided the framework for Spain's highly successful transition from dictatorship to parliamentary democracy. Come 2 June, however, he will no longer attend even the most transcendental and emotive of public celebrations
