The Spanish movie PARALLEL MOTHERS, directed by Pedro Almodovar and starring Penelope Cruz, elicited a nine-minute standing ovation at its screening on the opening night of the Venice Film Festival. Predictably, Cruz bagged the Coppa Volpi for Best Actress. That done, the Dream Team now sets its sights on the New York Film Festival and -- why not? -- the Academy Awards. It won't be the first time for the Team to win an Oscar either.

The Guidepost Galloping Gourmets were getting restless. Summer was waning and the travel possibilities were ever slimmer as Covid variants reared their ugly heads. "Delta, Smelta," I said, " enough worrying about variants. Let's go Island hopping." Just as the crew scrambled to find passports, I told them all they needed was their metro pass.

"I made my way to 'Goya’s Graphic Imagination'. To my delight, the royals, majas and partisans all remained in the Prado. This exhibit consisted mostly of The Met’s more upbeat collection of his drawings and etchings. An incisive graphic chronicler of his time, Goya would have relished chronicling the Covid vibe"

I hatched a plan after my doctor described my latest blood test as "boring." I never  wanted  anything  about me to be described as boring. So I drove from the  middle of  Long  Island, epicenter of bland restaurants, to  southern Brooklyn to  pick up the Guidepost Galloping Gourmets. They can root out Spanish food better than a savy pig can find a truffle.

Bessie Award-winning bailaora/choreographer Soledad Barrio is an intuitive and internal performer who possesses a preternatural connection to her character. She identifies with Antigona, “one of [whose] character traits is to love more than herself. She’s very passionate, and her objective is to take care of her family. It’s related to my life to be connected with family. One part of flamenco is love, passion and concern about the family unit. I connect with that a lot, too.” Noche Flamenca’s production of “Antigona” at La MaMa in Manhattan, scheduled for March 19-April 5, was cancelled due to the corona virus travel restrictions from Europe in March. Then all of New York went into lockdown. Shut in with husband choreographer/producer Martín Santangelo, Barios says “I’m diving into the abyss so I can resuscitate when this is over.”

It was a tremendous joy for the packed house at Manhattan’s Symphony Space (Broadway and 95th Street), enraptured by the October 14 one-night-only 90-minute non-stop, electrifying performance. The entire evening was magical, as if the spirit of de Lucía himself were watching and having a grand time.
