Despite his abdication, King Juan Carlos still performed a few official duties such as attending cultural events and historic commemorations. He was very much present during last year's celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution. That constitution provided the framework for Spain's highly successful transition from dictatorship to parliamentary democracy. Why Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein made all those revelations about her affair with King Juan Carlos and his alleged murky businesses isn't known. Not yet anyway. What's for sure is that her confessions will have already done irreparable damage to the abdicant king.

The speculations on whether or not King Juan Carlos was abdicating reached fever pitch when he became visibly frail. But it seems definite he’s not stepping down — which is good for the country.
