A GUIDEPOST REPRINT: “La Chunga: A new Beginning”, 19 June 1970 »
La Chunga went through a period when the purity of her dance was seriously threatened by the criticisms of those who wanted her to be more “sophisticated”. Came the dance lessons, arrangements, costumes and make-up came. Each one marked the threat of a gradual transformation into a good but no longer “different” bailaora. . . Chunga has recently “re-appeared” at the newly inaugurated Café de Chinitas. For many who have seen her dancing there in the past two weeks, La Chunga seems to be bringing back to life the legend that once made her the hope of flamenco purists.
THE 2022 CHESTNUT PARTY IN SPAIN SERVES FEW CHESTNUTS BUT REMAINS PACKED WITH CULT! »
Halloween is a popular “chestnut party” in many parts of Spain. As Castañada, it has Celtic roots that go way back and is closely related to the cult of the dead. The culinary star of the "deadly" feast is, as the name would say in no uncertain terms, the castañas or chestnuts. But due to drought and prolonged warm weather, chances are that there won’t be an abundance of the nuts. Just the same, leave it to the Spaniards to keep up their marvelous traditions, dead or alive.

If you are not careful, you’ll miss spring in Spain altogether and spend most of your life wondering how you did it. It’s not hard, because the meteorological border is pretty indefinite; one day it is a dull, cold, rainy winter day and POW… suddenly it’s summer. There are ways to catch it though, and it all depends on how much attention you pay and where you are in the very changeable land of Spain.

BOOK BUFF VICENTE CLAVEL, FATHER OF WORLD BOOK DAY »
Vicente Clavel proposed the designation of the 7th of October as Book Day to honor Miguel de Cervantes of the DON QUIXOTE fame on his birth anniversary. As a result, in February 1926 King Alfonso XIII signed the Royal Decree for the purpose. Decades later, UNESCO waded in and moved Book Day (World Book and Copyright Day) to 23 April, both Cervantes and Shakespeare's death anniversary. But the original idea behind Clavel's Book Day remains.
Bravas, Bridges & Brew in The Home of the Brave! »
I hatched a plan after my doctor described my latest blood test as "boring." I never wanted anything about me to be described as boring. So I drove from the middle of Long Island, epicenter of bland restaurants, to southern Brooklyn to pick up the Guidepost Galloping Gourmets. They can root out Spanish food better than a savy pig can find a truffle.
