Halloween is a popular “chestnut party” in many parts of Spain. As Castañada, it has Celtic roots that go way back and is closely related to the cult of the dead. The culinary star of the "deadly" feast is, as the name would say in no uncertain terms, the castañas or chestnuts. But due to drought and prolonged warm weather, chances are that there won’t be an abundance of the nuts. Just the same, leave it to the Spaniards to keep up their marvelous traditions, dead or alive.

The three-day festival of All Saints and Souls Days honor the dearly departed by visiting them in their final resting places. And as such it has nothing to do with trick or treat. Because of Spaniards flocking to the cemeteries, local governments offer extra bus services. In Madrid, the municipal government has acted in character. See the extra bus services here.

I'm a freelance journalist who took off to Madrid for a look-see and enjoy what was on offer while I was there. I was hoping to write a story about Halloween in this once-bustling capital. Considering how fiesta-loving the Spaniards are, All Saints Day cum Halloween should be quite festive. On the other hand, I had to get real. These are unusual times, the Era of the Covid. And I should be prepared to join a terribly watered-down holiday. . . Guess what I found out!

Spain is gearing up for the festivity that is somewhat confusing. It’s a feast that’s celebrated in a very personal way. A special day for communing with the deceased relatives, telling them they haven't been forgotten. But wait a minute, what they're actually celebrating is All Souls Day which in Spanish is Dia de los Muertos, i.e., Day of the Dead, and, strictly speaking, it falls on 2 November! People celebrate ALL SOULS DAY on 1 November which is ALL SAINTS DAY. So there's a bit of confusion here. . .

This article was first published when the Franco regime was still on. Hence the strictures on the Halloween celebrations you'll be reading about. ("The Spanish police may be expected to take exceedingly dim view of Halloween hi-jinks in public. And remember that masks or costume disguises in public are against Spanish law. . .") Other than those, the article is as timeless and fun to read today as it was 47 years ago. It would be; this is the third time it is being reprinted!
