Madrid has a new transport card (Tarjeta Transporte Publico) since July 2017.

What’s so great about the new card:

1. It’s rechargeable, multipersonal/transferable and valid for ten years, thereby allowing the passenger to save on time and effort.
2. With the new card you can load all the different fares: for single trip on the Metro and the Light Rail (Metro Ligero), ten Metrobus trips, as well as interurban and urban trips.
3. The card, which is contact-free, is eco-friendly. It eliminates the use of the traditional magnetic tickets which makes for a saving of 27 tons of paper annually.
4. Those entitled don’t lose the discounts that they’ve been enjoying before the advent of the new card.
