In an era that extols high tech and high voltage worldwide communications, May 15th, can be singled out as on the most amazing Madrid holidays, possessing a distinctive character that evokes the love of Oxtail ( Rabo de Toro), tapas and wines.
We are particulary delighted to present the best of The Madrid Capital on this very special day.
THE PATRON SAINT OF MADRID, ST. ISIDORE THE LABORER
Isidore, the farm laborer, also known as SAN ISIDRO LABRADOR, is known for his piety toward the less
fortunate, poverty stricken and animals. The Spanish word LABRADOR signifies worker
of the land. His full name was Isidro de Merlo y Quintana.
For lovers of Shellfish, this La Latina neighborhood institution and bar, is one of the best venues in
which to do a Tapa´s Crawl. The Rastro Flea Market, rocks and this bar is located
right in the center of all the action. The must haves here are:
The Razor Clams (Grilled Navajas), Clams on the Half Shell, a wide variety of Jumbo Prawns and Fried
Calamari. Wines by the glass are decently priced and good bar quality. They are not “Vega
Sicilia”, however, they pair well with the large array of Tapas. Prices are fair and just.
MERCADO SAN MIGUEL
This is not a restaurant per se, however, it is an epicurean market, with uncountable kiosks and
stalls which serve a vast selection of tapas, with a fusion of the traditional and the vanguard.
Locals in the Capital enjoy dropping by for a Calamari “Hero”, a huge Spanish Bread, filled with freshly
fried Calamari, for a mere 4 Euros, plus a beer or glass of ice cold Sherry Fino.
Where? The fifty year old CERVECERÍA PLAZA MAYOR 2.
OXTAIL AT TABERNA DE RAMALES

Located very close to the Royal Palace, serves traditional Oxtail, Cazone Adobado, a marinated Tope
Shark with a dip of home made Garlicy Mayonnaise, called Alioli. Another specialty at
Taberna de Ramales, is Huevos Rotos (broken eggs) which are sunnyside
up eggs served with Iberian Ham and potatoes.
TABERNA DE LA DANIELA BERNABEU
Calle Gutierrez Solana 2
Metro Line 10: Santiago Bernabeu
Quite a renowned establishment, Taberna La Daniela is well known for its
family style traditional meals including Oxtail.
Cava Baja 38
Metro Line 5: La Latina
With over 1,000 wine bottles, it is quite an impressive small bar, with amazingly extraordinary
tostas, a large toasted canapé with a wide variety of toppings based on seasonal availability.
One of the most historic restaurants in Madrid, where one sits amongst thousands of black and
white photographs of all well knowns who had dined there, including former King
Juan Carlos, former Presidents, Ava Gardner, authors, politicians,
actors, actresses, and artists amongst numerous others.
Think about the number of times you have instinctively asked yourself, WHAT DO YOU WANT
FOR LUNCH? Warm, fully flavored, melt in your mouth Oxtail is the answer!
