They know that the arrival of Columbus in the Americas in 1492 has affected the native populations adversely. Today the 12th of October Fiesta Nacional is couched in global unity, “a fiesta of union, of brotherhood highlighting Spain’s ties with the international community.” The attendance of the lovely 19-year-old Leonor Princess of Asturias at the Fiesta is converting it into a journey that takes one from Columbus's Hemisphere-busting exploration centuries ago to the reign of Her Royal Highness in the future.

Here's Guidepost Gourmets' account of their recent visit to the notorious Alcatraz Federal Prison in the San Fancisco Bay, California who, after a windy, cold ride from the island prison back to the mainland, looked for an appropriate place to eat. Picturing in their minds the ghost of the Spanish explorer Ayala, who first sighted the Alcatraz in 1775, sipping cervezas in a terraza in Madrid, they found there was no Spanish eatery to feast in and therefore had to settle for the Hard Rock Cafe. Sounds like a stiff sentence!

From total ignorance about the Catalan patin, to the first tentative sailing on the water close to the beach -- for safety -- to finally being able to join no less than a regatta, the Comarruga-Toredembara. The author thought she would embarrassingly come in last. But she was assured, not untauntingly but with good cheer, that "there are trophies for everyone."

This is a first-person story of the author who got to know about the completely artisanal patín a vela or Catalan catamaran -- no nails nor screws to assemble the craft, just glue. Ruderless, too -- and how she was introduced into the sport without prior experience whatsoever. She was territied when her instructor pushed her in her patin out into the sea but, as the reader will find out in Part 2 of "Skating at Sea", she made it. She certainly didn't drown with the patin.
