There aren’t many music festivals that could line up icons of the circuit the likes of pop-rock giants Sting, Steven Tyler, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Rufus Wainwright, Pretenders, Tom Jones and the Pet Shop Boys; Spanish and Latin American pop idols like Pablo Alborán, Miguel RĂos, David Bisbal, Niña Pastori, Rosario, Raphael, Manuel Carrasco, Luis Fonsi and JosĂ© Luis Perales; music artists who have given pigeonholing a skip, like Hans Zimmer, Gregory Porter, James Rhodes, Miguel Poveda, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso.
About the only music festival in Spain able to do it — and has done it on its first four editions — is Universal Music Festival which has made the Teatro Real its home.
UMF, as has become its tradition, has once again gathered the greats for its fifth (2019) edition: legendary figures of North American pop music Paul Anka and Joan Baez, as well as the classic of Spanish pop Los Secretos; JosĂ© MercĂ© & Tomatito who adds Flamenco flavor into the fabulous mix; not to mention Toquinho & SĂlvia PĂ©rez Cruz.
Throw jazz-pop singers Jamie Cullum and pop-Latin idol Antonio Orozco into the mix, top it with Spanish soprano Aitana, and you’ve got a delectable music menu! Go for it!
