Spring came early this year because of leap year. Winter is behind us, at least according to the calendar, and flowers are blooming all around us.
The true harbinger of Spring is the daffodil, bright yellow and cheerfully popping up from its carefully planted bulbs at the corner of every house in the neighborhood.
Those with dogs still have to make their rounds every day with their charges on leashes to give them some air and exercise. They are loyal and loving, but take a lot of daily care.
The plum tree is shedding its pink blossoms like a snow flurry. And the Rhododendron bushes are showing signs of budding their impressive flowers.
Crocuses have already come up and gone: they compete with the daffodils for Spring timing.
The hanging plant weathered the winter very well, and now the hummingbirds use it to hide in while they sip sugar water from their feeder.
Life goes on, in spite of the “lockdown” and joggers jog and walkers walk and cyclists cycle and the motorcycle rider takes to the less-trafficked roads with glee.
Lines at the pharmacies are long as this pill-popping society gets its prescriptions filled. The one thing people need the most, toilet paper, is out of stock, and that is not even “made in China”.
I had to buy a rare package of Indian lentils to make my hearty soup.
The one industry which is saving people from starvation is the pizza delivery business, although too much pizza is too much of a good thing!
Restaurants which deliver are staying open, but many have had to close.
President Trump has announced that money will be made available to middle and lower-income Americans to tide them over until the economy rebounds and “we win” over the coronavirus.
In a strange Spring like this one, we have to be grateful for small blessings and be strong.
Can summer and relief be far behind?
