Despite his abdication, King Juan Carlos still performed a few official duties such as attending cultural events and historic commemorations. He was very much present during last year's celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution. That constitution provided the framework for Spain's highly successful transition from dictatorship to parliamentary democracy. Come 2 June, however, he will no longer attend even the most transcendental and emotive of public celebrations

King Juan Carlos, the father of the reigning King of Spain, Felipe VI, isn’t coming – can´t come – home for Christmas much as he wants to. Hard on the heels of headline-grabbing scandals, he has self-exiled in the United Arab Emirates since last summer. And now neither King Felipe nor Pedro Sanchez, President of Spain, feels comfortable having the octogenarian "King Emeritus" back. He used to be hero-worshipped, having engineered the way to a parliamentary monarchy after nearly four decades of the stultifying Franco dictatorship.

Daughters of the American Revolution, España Chapter: "Patriot´s Day -- September 11th -- is the moment to get together for a remembrance ceremony 17 years after the 9/11 attacks. But as the Day falls on a Tuesday it is more practical for all those who could accompany us to meet on Sunday the 16th.
